| Joey + Rory - Cheater Cheater |
[Jul. 10th, 2009|07:30 pm] |
Not since David Wilcox have I become such a big fan of someone's music so quickly. I think it's hard not to fall in love with Joey + Rory, not only due to how great their music is, but how much fun it is to watch them play. I have never seen anyone more in love with their music than David is, but I have never seen anyone so in love with their partner as these two are.
Even if you're whining "yeah, but I hate country," you really should check out their Cheater Cheater video. It somehow manages to be simultaneously adorable and kick-ass.
Big thanks to my love for turning me on to this.
[And did I mention that Joey is smoking hot? And can sing like hell? Whewwee!] |

| Star Wars: The Old Republic |
[Jun. 1st, 2009|10:31 pm] |
Holy frakkin' hellsticks! It's things like this that make me glad I have a modern game system in the house again. And also make me fear for the hours and hours worth of free time that will be sucked away once I get my hands on this.
If only they could make movies like this...

PS: Whomever decided that this video should auto-start when embedded in people's blogs deserves a boot to the head. Auto-start is the <blink> of modern web design. But because I love you all, it's been replaced with a screenshot and a link. |

| Star Trek at the Ranch |
[May. 7th, 2009|04:00 pm] |
Last night I saw the best Star Trek movie in the series at the best theatre on the planet with the most amazing woman I've ever met, thanks to the best job I've ever had (so far).
Star Trek was nearly perfect! I couldn't imagine how they could possibly pull off a series relaunch without pissing off the hard code fans, alienating the newcomers, or both. But, as the 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes indicates, they did it brilliantly!
Do not wait for the DVD, folks. Or even second weekend. This is one to see opening night, in a theatre full of excited fans. You will not regret it. |

| Palm is back in the game with the Pre! |
[Jan. 8th, 2009|09:49 pm] |
The ads that accompanies the original iPhone drove me crazy. They were talking about it like it was something new, when I'd had the same basic functionality on my Treo since 2002 (before the iPod even had USB or color). Sure, it wasn't as pretty as the iPhone, but it was functional as all hell and much, much easier to use (physical keyboard, customizable buttons, copy/paste, etc).
But over the past two years I had been getting nervous. While Apple and Blackberry were continuing to innovate on their phones, and application developers bent over backwards to make snazzy toys for the iPhone, the Palm OS and accompanying hardware just stagnated. You'd get a slightly faster connection in a new model, and some buttons moved around, but nothing worth writing home about.
I was beginning to fear that I would eventually have to break down and get an iPhone in another year or two when my Treo gave up the ghost. Which wouldn't be that bad if they came out with an iPhone with a slide-out physical keyboard. And copy/paste. But the chances of that, I think, are pretty slim as long as Steve Jobs is running the show.
But this week, my faith in Palm has been restored. At CES, they gave a preview of their new phone, called the Palm Pre, and their new Linux-based operating system, called Web OS. It's a damned sexy phone, both physically and beneath the hood.
It does all the basics, plus integrating calendars/contacts from multiple sources, allowing you to run multiple apps at the same time, wireless charger, and has what looks like the ideal balance between touch-screen goodness and slide-out physical keyboard.
For the first time in ages, I'm actually looking forward to upgrading my phone. Yay! |

| Dr Horrible DVD now even cheaper |
[Dec. 4th, 2008|11:23 am] |
I already mentioned that the Dr Horrible DVD is available for pre-order on Amazon. But now they've slashed the price from $15 to just $10. And it's at #11 in the sales rank for the Movies & TV category.
The release date is 19 December, so it even has a good chance of arriving in time for the holiday. Can you say "stocking stuffer for everyone on your xmas list?"
And for those of you who really haven't been paying attention, yes, the DVD does include a musical commentary, along with a regular commentary, Evil League of Evil applications, easter eggs, etc. |

| How to Talk to Girls |
[Dec. 4th, 2008|02:06 am] |
This 9 year old kid wrote a pamphlet on How to Talk to Girls for his school's book fair. Now it's been published and is being sold on Amazon. If that's not an example of Net Gen empowerment, I don't know what is.
Also, for those Sinfest fans out there... is this kid what Slick wishes he were or what?

Ok, sure. The Black Friday sales this year were laughable. But the universe is making up for it by making the Dr Horrible DVD available today for pre-order (at $15). So go forth and spread the horrible goodness!
In related news, the first episode of The Guild: Season 2 went online last week. And boy is it a cliffhanger! Good to know that it will now be on a weekly release schedule.

[Nov. 20th, 2008|10:13 pm] |
Thanks to Corinne C (and the Fandango gang) for this one. One girl, one ukelele, one webcam and lots and LOTS of energy equals a delightfully entertaining addition to YouTube. (Doesn't she remind you of Jessa a little?) Her renditions of You're My Best Friend and Build Me Up are great too.
And for those of you who prefer a little more deadpan with your ukelele rockin' (or just hate MySpace), here's another great one. Laura, I think you'll like her. Oh, and she does a cover of Still Alive too.

| Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog - Act 1 |
[Jul. 14th, 2008|09:56 pm] |
Act one of Dr Horrible has been posted, three hours ahead of schedule. Not surprisingly, it's brilliant. And it's already available for purchase on iTunes as well ($1.99/act or all three for $3.99).
Remember, act 2 will go up on Thursday and act 3 on Saturday, then the free versions will be removed from the web after Sunday, with the download and (eventually) DVD and soundtrack still available after that.

| QMX Kaylee Maquette |
[Jul. 1st, 2008|06:11 pm] |
I know a lot of you out there will be adding this to your wishlists, but I particularly wanted to make sure that Kristi has seen this.
The Kaylee Maquette is the first in QMX's line of Little Damn Heroes maquettes (designed by our very own Adam "I have more talent in my pinky than you have in your entire frakin' body" Levermore-Rich).
It doesn't come out until 15 September, and at $50 it's more than I was expecting it to be. But it's just so damned cool that I'll still be getting one. I just won't be getting several as gifts (or getting the Mal & River ones that will come out later) the way I would have if they were closer to the $25-30 price point.
But still. Kaylee! |

| Farewell to the King Head |
[Jun. 30th, 2008|07:00 pm] |
I'm at a coworker's going away party at the Kings Head right now, and I'm just as sad about the state of the King's Head as I am about losing one of our best people.
It's been gutted. All the old-English decorations that lined the walls - the swords, the armor, the caber - has all been removed (and returned to the original owner). they're in the process of turning it into your average industrial night club.
I'm torn. On one hand, I'm sad that such an awesome pub is going away. But the new owners are really nice people, they went out of their way to get the old decorations back to the original owner, and I get it that a night club really would make more business sense than the old King's Head.
It's the end of an era. I still remember coming down here with Will and Tim every week for Irish dancing. Until the hot chick from Austin moved back home and it all fell apart.
*sigh* |

| Dr Horrible Release Plan |
[Jun. 28th, 2008|10:45 pm] |
Joss has posted information on the release plans for Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. For those of you who don't have time to read the full post:15 July - Act One will be released on the web 17 July - Act Two will be released on the web - 19 July - Act Three will be released on the web
20 July - All three will be removed from the web. Soon after, they will be made available for download for a nominal fee (no details yet). Somewhat after that, it will be released on DVD with "the finest and bravest extras in all the land." Details will be shared at ComicCon, but no word on whether or not the DVDs will be ready by then. For those of you in the Napster/YouTube crowd, I'm curious to hear what your thoughts are on this. Will you honor the content owner's wishes and download the legally purchasable copy after the 20th? Or will you instead go to the illegally copied versions that will no doubt be available on YouTube, etc? Does it make a difference to you that this is a self-financed project rather than a studio project? Would your answer be different if episodes of Dollhouse were released in the same manner? Update: In his follow-up post, Joss points out that there will indeed be a soundtrack, t-shirts and other schwag. |

| God, Inc |
[Jun. 26th, 2008|03:51 pm] |
There's this really funny video on YouTube that's done in the style of The Office, starring a cute redhead girl. No, no, not The Guild. I've already told you about that. (Although I may not have mentioned that The Guild: Season 1 DVD will be for sale at ComicCon.)
Instead, I have something new for you! Thanks to John & Lorien, I give you God, Inc, which can be summed up as "what if heaven were run like an office?"
Shanna, you in particular will probably love this one, for obvious reasons.

Holy crap this is cool.
It's Kaylee's pink dress, make completely from duct tape. And how adorable does she look in it? If you're the type that likes to take part in online contests, you should definitely give this your vote!
I showed this to Shawna and she said "I am completely AMAZED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" (all exclamation points are hers). |

| "Bid on this, America!" |
[Jun. 12th, 2008|03:01 pm] |
This is for all you fans of The Office. A few weeks ago, there was an episode where Dwight hard-sold Andy into giving him a killer deal on his Nissan Xterra, then flipped it for profit on eBay Motors.
Well, it turns out the Xterra was on loan to the show from their makeup artist, Kim Ferry, who is also Shawna's neighbor. [She was also the hair/makeup artist for Babylon 5. Yes, she's the one who invented the Centauri hairdo! How cool is that?]
Kim decided to actually sell her screen-used Xterra on eBay, to cash in on the hype while it's hot and get herself a snazzy new hybrid. She got Rainn Wilcon (Dwight) and a bunch of other cast members to sign it, Jenna Fisher to do a little gift basket for the winner, and such. The most amusing part, though, is the video Rainn did for her.
Please pass the word on to any other Office fans you may know!

| Chris's 3 Rules of Dating |
[Jun. 8th, 2008|05:08 pm] |
At BayCon, Chris revealed his three rules of dating, which contained enough insight and resonance that we later pressed him to post them for posterity. And after reviewing his expanded version, I have come to the conclusion that they're just as relevant to one's work life as one's love life.
Since I think these are pure brilliance and don't want anyone to miss them just because they're too lazy to follow a link, I'll reprint them here:
Chris's 3 Rules of Dating
I developed these some years back and several people asked me to write them down for them so here goes. Will they work for you? Maybe. I am reasonably confident that they worked for me given the beautiful, competent and intelligent woman I wound up marrying (see Poeso)!
Any set of rules/guidelines should be as succinct and unambiguous as possible which nessesitates them being broadly worded. It also means that there are clarifications for specific points (in case you didn't catch the obvious intent) I have included a few. Finally, like Asimov's Laws of Robotics, these rules are in an order for a good reason...
Rule #1: Be comfortable with yourself! If you can't be comfortable with yourself then other probably can't be either. Being comfortable includes being comfortable around people you don't know or by yourself. Don't always rely on the opinions of others. In the end, it is your opinion of yourself that matters. Don't mistake Arrogance for Confidence. The Arrogant need other people to be wrong so that they can be right which builds in weakness. The Confident recognize that there are many viewpoints that can be right and refines their viewpoints by allowing them to be challenged.
Rule #2: Meet new people. There are many people in the world who can be "right" for you. The more people you interact with the more likely you are to meet one of them. Just because someone appears to be "right" doesn't mean that they are not already taken or will ever be emotionally available to you. Take heart, enjoy your time with them and LEARN what a "right" person looks like and looks for. The worst that can happen is you get a cool new friend and maybe learn something about yourself. Sometimes meeting new people means expanding upon the relationships you already have. "Friend of a friend" is more likely to have common interests and come to you "pre vetted" by the people you already trust. Make time for the people who make you feel good about yourself. Who knows, one of the cool friends you have may have been waiting for you to become "emotionally available" and you may not have noticed it. Either way, it helps with Rule #1.
Rule #3: Avoid worthless relationships! Admit it, everyone has gotten into or stayed in a relationship that is just not fulfilling and never will be. Sex, routine, emotional security, what ever the reason in the end all you are doing is keeping yourself from growing as a person. Either work to improve the relationship you are in or get out! Grow or leave. Harsh, but this is the biggest trap most people fall in to: staying in a dead end relationship because they lack the confidence to either make it work or end it. If you are not yet in a relationship, remember rule #1, enjoy being with yourself. You don't need to get hooked up just to validate your self image. Flirt, have fun, be daring, but don't date some one unless you see in them the qualities that make you say "wow, I'd be really happy to tell my friends I am dating this person" |

| The Invitation |
[Jun. 8th, 2008|12:37 pm] |
Thanks to Scott for reminding me of this. I loved it when I first found it a few years ago, but it seems particularly appropriate now.The Invitation
It doesn't interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for, and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart's longing.
It doesn't interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dream, for the adventure of being alive.
It doesn't interest me what planets are squaring your moon. I want to know if you have touched the center of your own sorrow, if you have been opened by life's betrayals or have become shriveled and closed from fear of further pain! I want to know if you can sit with pain, mine or your own, without moving to hide it or fade it, or fix it.
I want to know if you can be with joy, mine or your own, if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning us to be careful, to be realistic, to remember the limitations of being human.
It doesn't interest me if the story you are telling me is true. I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself; if you can bear the accusation of betrayal and not betray your own soul; if you can be faithless and therefore trustworthy.
I want to know if you can see beauty even when it's not pretty, every day,and if you can source your own life from its presence.
I want to know if you can live with failure, yours and mine, and still stand on the edge of the lake and shout to the silver of the full moon, "Yes!"
It doesn't interest me to know where you live or how much money you have. I want to know if you can get up, after the night of grief and despair, weary and bruised to the bone, and do what needs to be done to feed the children.
It doesn't interest me who you know or how you came to be here. I want to know if you will stand in the center of the fire with me and not shrink back.
It doesn't interest me where or what or with whom you have studied. I want to know what sustains you, from the inside, when all else falls away.
I want to know if you can be alone with yourself and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments.

| Airwolf replica on eBay |
[May. 15th, 2008|06:48 pm] |
"Airwolf is the adjective we should use to describe anything of majesty, beauty, and intensity. Something that is simply fucking bad ass... is Airwolf. James Brown's music is Airwolf. Shakespeare is Airwolf. Sex so good it makes your spine ache and your knees buckle... That's Airwolf. And nothing is more Airwolf than Airwolf."

| Dollhouse Trailer |
[May. 15th, 2008|03:03 pm] |
Here it is. The world-at-large's first glimpse at Joss Whedon's Dollhouse. Isn't Olivia's voice mesmerizing?
Oh, and Joss has confirmed that Dollhouse has been picked up for a full 13 episode season, rather than the 7 episodes previously approved. I'm already looking forward to season 2!
Update: There's also a teaser clip available. Not as an embed, though, apparently.
[Woops. Looks like the Dollverse folks forgot to get Fox's permission before posting this to YouTube. The video has been taken down. Although it looks like there are a few reposts that haven't been caught yet.] |

| Have you met Chumby? |
[Apr. 29th, 2008|09:21 pm] |
[Thanks to NPR's Future Tense for bringing this one to my attention. I'm surprised I hadn't heard about this yet from one of you Linux geeks or consumer electronics early adopters.]
Chumby is a tiny Linux-based touchscreen computer that serves up a variety of web-based widgets, and costs less than a mid-range iPod ($180 for either white, black or "mocha" - shown here).
You can set it next to your bed to use as an alarm clock, waking you up to your iPod, weather feeds, stock quotes, news stories, etc. Or you can set it next to your computer and use it for internet radio stations, casual games, and social media feeds. Among the 500+ available widgets are: - News feeds
- Stock quotes
- Social media feeds
- eBay & Woot feeds
- Email
- Casual games
- Various clock interfaces
- Calendars
- BART status
- Traffic & weather feeds
- Video feeds (like Letterman's monologues)
- Webcams
- And weird shit like a Shakespeare insult generator and Magic 8 Ball.
It's not the most phenomenal piece of technology I've ever seen. But with so many clever widgets crammed into a cute little interface for just $180, it's really not bad. I can't imagine why it isn't getting more buzz than it is. You know if it were pure white with a fruit logo it would be all the rage. Maybe it's just lacking the marketing budget?Has anyone gotten a chance to play with one of these up close?
Corinne C, would this be something you'd put on your wishlist to solve your internet-radio-at-work needs?
Felicia, will this be the latest tool in your quest to make the social web your bitch?
Do you hardware hackers out there have ideas for what you want to do wit this puppy when you get your hands on one? I'm seriously tempted to get one of these to experiment with. But would it help or hurt my efforts to wake up earlier? I mean I already check my email, stocks and news on my Treo before getting out of bed each morning. Do I really need the extra temptation of these shiny widgets adding to the lure of such a comfy bed?
No, it's probably best that I not get one. But I'd still love to see one. |

[Apr. 2nd, 2008|10:56 pm] |
In anticipation of the return of Battlestar Galactica this Friday, they're posted a video on the BSG site called What the Frak is Going On? that gives a quick recap of all three seasons. It's brilliantly executed, and funny as hell.
If you've already seen the show, you'll love this. If you haven't... don't watch it. Borrow the DVDs and catch up the old fashioned way. You'll get a lot more wow for your buck. Then watch it when you're caught up, so you can properly appreciate it. :) |

| A Tale of Two Box Sets |
[Mar. 28th, 2008|10:59 pm] |
Amazon had a 50% off sale on sci-fi DVDs, so I took the opportunity to get both the Stargate SG-1 and X-Files complete series box sets (two for the price of one!). The two sets are very similar in some senses, but it's the little things that count.
Both sets contain all of the disks available individually, some bonus disks, and an episode guide booklet. Both sets have really nice boxes (Stargate especially). And both sets will be out of date when the next spin-off movie is released. But the real difference is in the individual season packaging.
The X-Files set has separate, sturdy booklets for each season/movie. Each one opens like a book, with a DVD on each page. It's the perfect packaging.

The Stargate set, on the other hand, has just two booklets, with long fold-out pages that require several feet wide desk space to open it fully, and make it impossible to take out (or loan out) a single season at a time.

As gorgeous as the Stargate box is, I'm afraid this is a deal breaker for me. If anyone out there has the individual seasons in slimset and wants to trade for the box set, let me know. Otherwise I'll be reselling the box set on eBay to buy the individual seasons.
The funny thing is that I sold my individual seasons in anticipation of eventually buying the box set. Oh well. :) |

| The Fate of the Cow Palace |
[Mar. 23rd, 2008|09:25 pm] |
To many of us, the Cow Palace represents one thing: the Dickens Christmas Fair, where so many of us enjoy spending a good portion of the winter months, reveling in Dickensian England, surrounded by dozens of our closest friends and entertaining the public.
But Dickens Fair only takes up a small side-building of the Cow Palace, for just two months out of the year. The rest of the year, the Cow Palace remains a hollow shell of the grand gathering place it was in decades past. Chainlink fences separate it from the surrounding community, the gigantic parking lot is typically a desolate stretch of asphalt, and when niche events do use the venue, they give very limited contribution to the surrounding community.
Even the Dickens Fair doesn't really bring anything to the neighborhood as a whole. A few actors may pop over to McDonalds or KFC for a snack occasionally, but predominantly the money that the event generates stays within the chain link fence.
Now that the city is planning to buy the Cow Palace, level the existing venue and replace it with housing, shopping centers and a school. Things that the community desperately needs all twelve months of the year. They want to destroy the venue in which we've spent the past many years celebrating the holidays in an unparalleled manner. So our instinct is to resist, to fight back, to petition the city to keep the venue as it is, so we may continue out revels.
But please, take a step back. Look at the Cow Palace as a whole, instead of just our small portion of it. Look at the community that the Cow Palace is in the center of. Is it really the best possible use for such a huge plot of land? Should we really be fighting to save a venue that is out of code, out of its time, and out of sync with the neighborhood in which it resides?
The Dickens Fair didn't start at the Cow Palace. We can move our little slice of England to another venue and it will continue to live for decades to come. I urge you all to keep this in mind over the coming months. Instead of pouring your energy into "saving" something that's already showing signs of decay, why not instead pour it into finding a new venue for the event that we all love so much.
Don't fight to keep hold of the past. Look forward to rebuilding fresh for the next chapter of the Dickens Fair's history. |

If Boondock Saints finally getting a sequel isn't good enough news, we also learn that the much talked about prequel to Battlestar Galactica, called Caprica, has been greenlit. For the uninitiated:Set 50 years before the events of Battlestar Galactica, Caprica follows two rival families--the Greystones and the Adamas --as they grow, compete and thrive in the vibrant world of the 12 Colonies. Enmeshed in the burgeoning technology of artificial intelligence and robotics that will eventually lead to the creation of the Cylons, the two houses go toe to toe. |

For those of you who saw the news about Doctor Horrible's Sing-a-Long Blog and asked yourself, "sure, it sounds awesome, but can Neil Patrick Harris sing?" Yes. Yes he can. Ammy can attest to how good he was in Rent. But my personal favorite is this little gem.

Imagine a web-short musical about a low-rent super villain, the super hero who keeps beating him up, and the cute girl from the laundromat he's too shy to talk to.- Written by Joss Whedon.
- Neil Patrick Harris as Doctor Horrible.
- Nathan Fillion as Captain Hammer.
- Felicia Day as Penny.
- Costumes by Shawna Trpcic.
Oh, yes. It is indeed official. And it will be legendary! |

Pan to a new bit character sitting in the hallway.
"Wow, that girl looks like Zoe Bell."
Cute new bit character opens her mouth, and a Kiwi accent falls out.
"That IS Zoe Bell!!" |
